Eclectic Interior Design: How to Create a Space That’s Really “You”
One of the interior design styles that I’m learning to love and that I know a lot of you might have questions about is eclectic interior design. This style of interior design is all about individuality, and so it can be kind of hard to describe because we’re looking for ways to reflect the layers and story of a unique person through how their home is designed and decorated. It’s about blending what you love, no matter the era or style, and making it work in a way that feels authentic to you, and as an interior designer, I can tell you that the reward for creating a great, eclectic look, is huge. Here are five essential elements to help you achieve that effortlessly curated look yourself!
1. Incorporating Antiques, Vintage Pieces, and Meaningful Items
One of the most beautiful aspects of eclectic design is its ability to tell a story. This style encourages the use of antiques, vintage pieces, or items with personal significance. Whether it’s a family heirloom, a thrifted gem, or artwork that resonates with you, these items add layers of character to your space. The key is to mix these pieces with more contemporary elements, creating a balance between the old and new.
2. Embracing Bold, Colorful Combinations
If you love color, eclectic design is the perfect playground. Unlike more subdued styles, eclectic interiors thrive on bold, unexpected combinations. Think jewel tones paired with pastels, or rich earthy hues combined with vibrant accents. The goal is to create a space that feels lively and dynamic, where each color enhances the overall vibe without overwhelming the senses. Don’t be afraid to experiment—this style is all about embracing the unexpected.
3. Playing with a Variety of Fabrics, Materials, and Textures
In eclectic design, texture is just as important as color. Mixing a variety of fabrics and materials—like wood, metal, ceramic, velvet, and linen—adds depth and interest to a room. Imagine a velvet sofa paired with a metal coffee table, or wooden chairs draped with linen throws. Mingling different textures creates a tactile experience that invites you to touch, feel, and really live in the space. This richness is often what makes eclectic spaces feel so inviting.
4. Adding Purposeful, Quirky Details in Transitional Spaces
One of the joys of eclectic design is the fun of including quirky, unexpected details, especially in transitional spaces like hallways, entryways, or nooks. A strategically placed vintage mirror, or maybe a gallery wall of mismatched frames, or a boldly patterned runner can make these often-overlooked areas stand out. These details might seem random, but when done with intention, they add a sense of whimsy and make the space feel intentional and connected.
5. Using Patterns to Create Visual Interest
Patterns are a powerful tool in eclectic design, whether they’re found in curtains, pillows, tapestries, or rugs. Don’t be afraid to mix different patterns—as long as they share a common color palette or theme, they can work beautifully together. For example, a geometric rug can pair well with floral cushions, as long as there’s a unifying or complimentary color. Patterns are a great way to add visual interest and keep eyes and bodies moving through the space.
Eclectic interior design is all about embracing what you love and creating a space that’s uniquely yours. By blending antiques and meaningful items with bold colors, varied textures, quirky details, and playful patterns, you can craft a home that’s as dynamic and multifaceted as you are. Remember, the best spaces are those that tell your story—so don’t be afraid to mix, match, and make it your own.
